Grotte Stellaire by Julien Salaud

With the help of a small team, the artist and trained anthropologist has manipulated white string, nailing the material to the ceiling in the shapes of deer which seem to comprise a celestial body when illuminated with an ultraviolet lighting system.

Just a personal aside, while I think this is interesting, why is it important to share that he is a “trained” anthropologist? “Trained” is a horrible word to describe the education of anthropology, and anthropology has absolutely no relevance to this artwork what so ever. It’s just irritating as an anthropologist, that something like this would continue to obscure people’s already misinformed notion of anthropology. We study humanity (you know, groups of people), if you were confused.

Added to another reason to dislike journalists…

To continue my revelations about Islam

Today I learned, from a guest lecturer about Islamophobia, that Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are all Abrahamic religions, meaning they all originated via the spiritual tradition of Abraham. In fact Judaism and Islam believe in the same God.

Who knew? Yes I realize anyone that knows much of anything about multiple religions.

Can I please just go to south east Asia this summer? I need to find a way to work Thailand, Malaysia, and maybe Hong Kong into my India study abroad for summer 2013. Oh how I miss the sensation of a new country…

Ok seriously Vienna is the raddest place in the world. I miss it, and all of the friends I have made there, more then words can explain. Also, an aside, this is one of the most beautiful uses of the German language I have ever seen. Wortschatz = Vocabulary   Wort Schatz = Word Treasure.

I have 3 final papers due in the next 3 weeks and I am supposed to know which class you are in, how? Maybe that lecture with 150 people that I know 3 people from? So for a number of reasons I can fairly safely infer that it’s that one. If you bothered to show up to class today, the TA was very explicit as to what the assignment requires, for the third class in a row. She even read directly from the text giving an outline from which a high school freshman could have written an acceptable paper. You are an adult now, show up; pay attention; and take some responsibility for yourself. At the very least, share what class you are referring to and what about the assignment confuses you. Otherwise I’m going to spend the time that I could write an email to you explaining the assignment on posting something pretty pointless on the internet out of sheer frustration.

“There is no need for democracy in Islam. The West needed it because there was no equality there […] The internal class struggles of Western society do not exist in Islam.”—- Abdulhamid II, (r.1876-1909)

My knowledge of Islam is negligible, and so this is an extremely interesting assertion to consider from an anthropological perspective. I hope to learn more about the cultures surrounding Islam and of itself to be able to analyze this idea more thoroughly. It would certainly cause a huge intellectual upheaval in me to find validity in an assertion that religion can eliminate class struggle.

Exactly one year ago today I returned home from the most powerful trip I have ever taken. I spent 2 weeks traveling through Madrid, Barcelona, London, Istanbul, and Dublin. I was fortunate to be able to share parts of this experience with some friends and family, but ultimately I was on my own. I met people I will never forget, learned things that changed my life, and had adventures I could have never dreamt. I will remember this trip for the rest of my life for three reasons:

1. The unbelievable generosity and interest of complete strangers. I met some amazing people, one of which I am hoping to go spend the summer with in Madrid.

2. Being places and doing things that I never believed were attainable. A small town Pennsylvania kid, cruising down the Bosphorus as the sun sets over the hills of Istanbul was one of the most powerful images I’ve ever witnessed. Yes, because it was extraordinarily beautiful but more so because I was in another world, somewhere that a lot people I knew didn’t even know the location of.

3. The most significant part of this whole trip was the way each location challenged me, in unique yet complementary ways.
Spain challenged me to take control of my destiny, to be active in my own life and search out the things I wanted to see, the things I wanted to do, and to not just be a passenger on this trip.
London challenged me to make the most of brief encounters with people. I only spent one night in London and it was as a layover between flights. I arrived to my hostel around 8pm and left at 4am, but I met 3 people that night that made a big enough impression on me to be remembered in detail a year later. I only ended up sleeping for 2 hours because we stayed up talking for half the night, on the back of 3 days with a combined total of 5 hours sleep. These people are going to alter your life, you can always sleep later.
Istanbul was the biggest challenge, it forced me to leave my cultural backpack at the door. I had no experience to draw on, nothing to relate things to, and, because of my ignorance, no prejudices to be influenced by. Each event, no matter how small, was taken with the awe and wonder of a child. It’s a feeling you can only truly understand by entering an environment with a different alphabet.
Dublin was the most surprising challenge. St. Patrick’s day in Dublin was so over run by tourists, that it really caused me to reflect on the results of the rest of my trip. While I had absorbed so much from each place I visited, in my own small way, I to had been absorbed by the people I encountered in those cultures. I brought to them something new, something outside of what they were used to. While this exchange is what is beautiful about travel, there is a darker side to it. When things are reversed and the visitors become the dominant influence, it can have disastrous effects on the indigenous culture. To an extent it becomes a reverse cultural colonization, amplifying the globalized commonalities across the world, creating places that are beginning to lose their uniqueness. On the particular days that I was in those cities, Dublin and Istanbul were astounding antitheses of the globalized city.

I got caught up in the whole Double Monk trend when I started following #menswear, and almost pulled the trigger on a pair. In the end I’m glad I didn’t, as I’ve grown to better understand what I want from my own style, and while double monks look good on a lot of people, they don’t fit with me. It’s similar to $200+ pairs of raw selvage denim jeans. It just isn’t something I can rationalize internally, (though Rouge Territory is really challenging the denim concept). These single monk’s from Good Guys are something I’m really feeling right now. At, at least, €150 they are a pretty fair price, but until my own understanding of my style settles down a little more an investment like that will have to wait.

I don’t normally post this kind of thing on my tumblr, but I want some extra accountability. I’m getting back into soccer training after almost 3 years since my last competitive match. I haven’t been just sitting around, but I haven’t done any sort of real training until last week. Today was my first timed run. This is now hanging on my fridge. It speaks for itself.
